These I find very helpful and they are a good reference. The Matoran Universe Map was released in the book Bionicle: Makuta's Guide to the Universe and the Map of Bara Magna was released in Lego Magazine.
Remember to click on the image for full size. The map of Bara Magna is signifigantly bigger than the map of the matoran universe. this may suggest that it is 'to scale'
Also, it is very difficult to read the captions when the images are not viewed at their full size

totally. Now with Mata Nui's body off the ground, to get to Ten Krom's island would require you going through the not-so-secret-anymore island of Artahka. before Makuta stood up in Mata Nui's body, the whole system allowed for the travel across the aqua magna so one could go from daxia to Ten Krom's island without running into the side of Mata Nui's body.
I think before Mata Nui fell asleep, the island camouflaged itself to remain hidden when travellers were exploring some of the un-named islands between Artahka and Ten Krom's Island or the island itself (for those explorers foolish enough to explore that)
